Why silver rings turn black and how to clean them at home

Many buyers fear a fake when a ring darkens after a few weeks. In fact real silver is the metal most prone to tarnish.
Why silver darkens
Silver reacts with sulphur compounds in air, sweat and some cosmetics, forming a dark layer of silver sulphide on the surface. Heavy perspiration, sea air, perfume and lotions all speed it up.
Three ways to clean it at home
- A silver polishing cloth: fastest for light tarnish. Wipe in one direction without scrubbing.
- Silver dip: immerse for the time stated on the bottle, rinse and dry. Avoid it on pearls, porous stones and deliberately oxidised designs.
- Warm water with a few drops of dish soap: soak 10 to 15 minutes, brush gently with a soft brush, then dry.
Keeping silver bright
Take rings off for showers, swimming and cleaning products. Store them in a zip bag or closed box. Wearing silver often also helps, thanks to gentle friction with skin and fabric.
When to see a jeweler
Deep tarnish, many scratches or worn rhodium plating are jobs for professional polishing or replating.
